Introducing The Platform

There are 4 components of the Shodan platform and together they encapsulate everything that we offer:

Websites

Websites are a convenient way to get started but we recommend the CLI, API or integrations for production use. At Shodan, we consider our websites a demo of the underlying platform and they're all written entirely using the public Shodan APIs.

Developer APIs

The Shodan APIs are the preferred way to access the platform and they offer the most flexibility as well as customization.

Command-Line Tools

We offer various, specialized command-line tools that make common tasks easy and don't require writing any code.

Integrations

The Shodan APIs are the preferred way to access the platform and they offer the most flexibility as well as customization.

The Shodan book has sections for each of the above components and you can skip around them based on your preference for accessing the platform. Everything is powered by the same Shodan APIs which means the data between them is the same.

Pricing

Shodan doesn't price its products based on the number of end-users or the size of the company. Instead, access to the platform is based on the volume of data that can be downloaded and the number of IPs that can be monitored. There are 3 pricing tiers available at Shodan that are aimed at different types of organizations and users:

  • Membership: aimed at individuals that want to get started. It costs a one-time payment of $49.
  • Subscriptions: organizations that want to keep track of what they have exposed to the Internet and use the Shodan API for IP enrichment. Pricing is tiered into $69/ month (Freelancer plan), $359/ month (Small Business plan) and $1099/ month (Corporate plan).
  • Enterprise: organizations that require bulk access to all the data that Shodan gathers. Contact sales@shodan.io for pricing.

The API subscription plans have names such as Freelancer but they can be purchased by organizations of any size. A large company isn't required to purchase a Corporate subscription or Enterprise license.

Throughout the documentation we will use the following badges to indicate which plan is required to access a given feature, tool or website:

  • Everyone : available to everyone and doesn't require a Shodan account
  • Free : available to free accounts
  • Member : available to Members
  • Freelancer : available to subscribers on the Freelancer plan
  • Small Business : available to subscribers on the Small Business plan
  • Corporate : available to subscribers on the Corporate plan
  • Enterprise : available to Enterprise customers
